POKOTABI / Senchan
千ちゃん
Located in Saiin, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, Senchan is an unpretentious izakaya popular for its affordable daily lunch specials, fried chicken, and grilled fish, shifting at night to teppanyaki, fried dishes, and personal hot pots.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked into a quiet pocket close to the residential streets of Saiin in Kyoto's Ukyo Ward, Senchan retains the gentle, nostalgic feel of the Showa era. Around lunchtime, local office workers and neighborhood regulars step through the noren curtain in steady numbers, quickly filling the seats in search of wholesome, budget-friendly set meals.
The main midday draw is the unpretentious roster of set lunches, led by a rotating daily special. Generous staples like freshly fried chicken karaage and salted mackerel grilled to an aromatic crisp pair effortlessly with bowls of plain white rice. Accompanied by warm soup, these balanced trays serve as a comforting, dependable staple of everyday neighborhood life.
Come nightfall, the kitchen turns to an expansive menu spanning casual drinking snacks and hearty evening plates. Guests settle in with draft beers, tumblers of sake, or whisky highballs, grazing on teppan-cooked sauce yakisoba and spicy pork kimchi. The lineup also features deep-fried bites like tempura and crisp gyoza, alongside winter warmers such as Sichuan-style boiled tofu simmered in individual hot-pot servings.
For those simply after a solid dinner, the restaurant keeps substantial options like tonkatsu and katsuni (simmered cutlet) set meals available well into the evening, making it an easy drop-in whether you are drinking or not.
